Our Story
Parkwood Throwing Courses, also known as Buird Pottery, is based at the Parkwood Centre in Alfreton, Derbyshire. What began as a passion for working with clay has grown into a dedicated teaching studio, offering pottery throwing courses to people of all ages and abilities. Whether you have never touched a potter's wheel or you are looking to develop existing skills, our courses are designed to guide you through every stage of the process.
We believe there is something deeply rewarding about making something with your own hands. The feel of wet clay on the wheel, the concentration it demands, and the satisfaction of lifting a finished piece from the kiln are experiences that stay with you. Our aim is to share that experience with as many people as possible, in a relaxed and supportive environment where creativity comes naturally.
Our studio at Parkwood Centre provides a well-equipped space with everything you need to learn and practise the craft. Clay, glazes, and kiln firing are all included in the cost of every course, so there are no hidden extras. Class sizes are kept deliberately small to ensure each student receives plenty of individual attention and expert guidance throughout.
We take pride in building a welcoming community of makers. Many of our students return term after term, progressing from their first tentative attempts on the wheel to producing confident, finished work. Others come for a single taster session and leave with a new appreciation for the skill and patience that pottery demands.
